We asked Johnny about his experience with utilizing Shyft in his store, and talked about how it helped with many of the issues employees would have with accessing their schedule:

Nowadays, everyone has a smartphone; people check their phone every five minutes, so it gives them something to do. Might as well check the schedule on their phone instead of going out of the way to check the schedule in person. It’s easier for them.

By increasing the accessibility to their schedule, Johnny has been able to make sure that employees know exactly when their shift is, and know that they are able to contact someone in case that proposed shift isn’t working out.

If an employee is out for the week, they wouldn’t have to contact another employee to take a picture of the schedule or come back to work before their next scheduled shift. They’d be able to open the app and know exactly when they were expected to begin work again.

“We’re open from six in the morning until closing time. We don’t do a first, second or third shift, that we use to cut in parts of the day, but we schedule according to the busier and slower times.” Johnny said.

“We know someone isn’t going to be able to make it in or call out, and we need to remain a number of registers – to have the number of people we have to have scheduled actually come in, otherwise it’ll be a huge mess in the checkout area,” Johnny said. He continued on, speaking to the advantages of implementing Shyft into his particular store. “[Shyft] is really great for maintaining the amount of people we’re supposed to have for that day.”

One of the biggest benefits, for Johnny, is the ability to approve or deny the shift swaps his employees make.

“Depending on who it is, people who cannot switch shifts with someone – for example, a cashier wouldn’t be able to switch shifts with a bagger because the bagger wouldn’t know how to use a register yet. So, it’s nice to get approval instead of them just calling someone at the store and approving the shift.”

By making sure that he’s able to supply experienced employees to the positions they are best suited for, he expedites the checkout process and eliminates bottlenecks that may arise from employees who are learning the ropes and in return, giving them a better chance to thrive in their position.

As an added bonus, Johnny let us know that it got rid of complications that may come with employees calling the store to get a shift covered: “We have a lot of new people that just started, so new people who would pick up phone calls wouldn’t be able to think of a person off the top of their head to see if they were a bagger or a cashier.”
